Defining Public Space

The aim of this project is to explore and discover the unmet user needs within public space in relation to social interaction and human well-being; both fundamental in creating a successful and cohesive public environment.

Through conducting a variety of observational research techniques, I produced a set of clear design deliverables; these have combined to dictate the conceptual solution of each design.

Concept 1: 'a brief rest'

Designed specifically for passing human traffic. 'A Brief Rest' incorporates a long bench, perch seats / tables for re-arranging bags, and a chest height bar for leaning on and taking the weight off your feet.

Materials:
Die-cast Steel
English Sweet Chestnut

Concept 2: 'watching the world go by'

'Watching The World Go By' is designed for one person. The intended function is for relaxing, reading and watching the world go by without the interruptions of a crowded communal bench.

The design features arm rests and a small side table for a coffee, newspaper or bag.

Materials:
Cast Concrete
English Sweet Chestnut

HAVING-A-CHATLARGE

Concept 3: 'having a chat'

'Having a Chat' developed through observations of friends and couples. Often sitting away from other public seating users, people in twos seemed to want a certain amount of (but not too much) privacy.

The concept also has the potential to engage strangers who may have otherwise never met.

Concept 4: 'Wave Bench System'

Designed around the theme of social interaction, Wave Bench System creates space within the seating system itself. The design is intended to allow the user a choice of where and how they sit.

The Simplicity of the design and production method allows the urban planner to adapt the shape to suit its environment and the needs of the users within it.
